The SQL Server DBA is operationally responsible for the SQL Server database servers. Some primary areas of focus are daily maintenance, performance, security, disaster recovery, and capacity planning.
A DBA is expected to build and maintain positive work relationships within the DBA team as well as other teams. A DBA is expected to be largely self-directed, able to determine daily tasks and priorities with minimal direction.
Install and configure SQL Server instances
Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot database maintenance activities including backups, database consistency checks, index defragmentation, and index statistics management
Monitor database performance and troubleshoot performance issues as they arise
Assist production support in troubleshooting and resolving production database issues
Execute the DBA functions for disaster recovery testing
Participate in on-call rotation to provide after-hours DBA support
Project future capacity needs
Required Skills
2-5 years of experience as a SQL Server database administrator
2 years of experience with SQL Server 2008
SAN technology, EMC preferred
Recent experience administering very large databases (1 terabyte or more) on SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2
