Database Administrator
Job description:
Database administrator with 3-5 years of experience working in a 24x7 production support organization in the internet commerce industry. The majority of his or her time will be spent working directly with other Operations personnel with some need to interface with our internal software engineering groups. The individual should have 7+ total years of systems and database background. The person will be responsible for monitoring, database partitioning, index creation and rebuilding, and other tuning parameters for optimal performance on multiple platforms, both relational and XML-based,
The individual will need to be a proven leader that is able to *hit the ground running* on current DB related issues as well as be a strong generalist who will be able to figure out integration and networking issues with other network devices, appliances, and our applications. We need someone who can be self-sufficient but also know when to escalate issues to our management.
The job role calls for someone who is comfortable in building and supporting production environments for 24 x 7 consumer applications. This includes occasional system maintenance tasks during off peak hours.
** Fluency in written and spoken English
** Prior experience with consumer web-based e-commerce sites including media or mobile entertainment industry content rich sites
** Experience in high volume electronic commerce or Internet production environments
** Previous experience with large scale Unix environments, dealing with high transactional processing and network traffic volumes in redundant system formats
** Superb organization and follow-through skills
** Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills
** Excellent Troubleshooting Skills
** Comfort with mixed production environments including Microsoft and Linux.
** 5+ Years database administration and/or data architect skills encompassing both MYSQL, MS SQL and/or Oracle.
** Ability to produce ad-hoc and pre-canned reports direct from database and/or 3rd party reporting applications
** Good interpersonal skills, team cooperation, and a strong results-oriented work ethic
** No fear of dealing with software applications utilizing XML, XSLT, JAVA, HTML, mobile oriented HTML/XML, XML databases, Apache Tomcat or other java servlet engines, etc
Desirable Skills and Responsibilities:
** Excellent RedHat EL 3 and 4 operating systems; strong UNIX background also okay
** IPStore SAN storage
** Experience with application administration such as web servers, application servers, SMTP gateways, security devices, etc, in Linux and Windows environments
** XML and XSLT experience
** Installation, configuration and maintenance of MySQL databases.
** Tuning MySQL servers and troubleshooting performance problems.
** Setting up MySQL backup, replication, load balancing and
clustering.
** Monitor MySQL databases for efficiency and help drive improvements.
** Diagnose OS, network and storage issues.
** Tuning hardware and software settings.
** Work with development team to help them create highly reliable data applications.
** Coordinating with IT and developers on new product releases.
** Maintain and troubleshoot production data pipeline and data tools.
** Create tools and processes to automate MySQL administration and monitoring.
** Create MySQL best practices documentation and work with teams to help them understand how MySQL may fit into their applications.
** Work with IT to manage hardware resources.
Also Desired:
** Excellent problem solving, multi-tasking and communication skills. Good prioritization skills.
** Very strong sense of responsibility and commitment.
** Fast learner with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
** Knowledge of the features, pros, and cons of MySQL storage engines. InnoDB, Berkeley previous experience is a must.
** Ability to provide on-call support as well to handle out-of-band requests.
** Familiarity with Perl DBI, Shell scripting and MySQL administration tools.
** UNIX/Linux system administration and Oracle experience is a big plus. MS SQL also a plus.
** Experience with building system and application level monitoring tools for large deployment are highly preferable. Familiarity with some of monitoring applications like Netsaint/Nagios.
** 3+ years of experience in release engineering, operations and technical support.
** Detailed knowledge of the UNIX/Linux operating system, prior experience with FreeBSD system administration is a plus.
