Database Administrator
Our Database Administrator (DBA) position is responsible for the environmental aspects of a Database or Database Server. In general, these include:
Recoverability - Creating and testing Backups
Integrity - Verifying or helping to verify Data Integrity
Security - Defining and/or implementing access controls to the data
Availability - Ensuring maximum uptime and reduction of system interruptions
Performance - Ensuring maximum performance possible given constraints
Capacity Planning: Tracking Space and Performance to ensure a constant level of availability to our clients
Monitoring - Tracking the Systems health to ensure maximum Availability and Performance
Maintenance - Application of software or hardware on a regular planned basis
Troubleshoot - Many problems arise which require a high degree of skill to trouble shoot unexpected issues.
Minimums:
Bachelors degree
Minimum 3 year's professional Database Administrations experience
Proficient with SQL
Proficient Performance and Tuning experience
2 Years Database modeling experience
3 Years experience in Sybase ASE, Oracle, or MSSQL
Sybase IQ a plus
Knowledge of relational databases and methods for efficiently retrieving data from them
Experience programming in scripting languages such as k-shell, c-shell, and Perl
Strong UNIX/LINUX background
C++ programming skills a plus
Strong UNIX/LINUX background
Experience in data analysis and problem solving with large data sets
Ability to manage simultaneous projects
Financial industry experience supporting trading dependant systems a plus
Operation Database Administrator Role:
The Operations DBA will spend most of the day following a checklist of daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks. The tasks will have been thought out and continually refined in order to anticipate, prevent, or detect any problems with Availability and Performance in mind. Every new problem will eventually give rise to a change in one or more checklists, bringing that problem under the overall detection-and-prevention regime. Once a steady state is achieved, the operations DBA role becomes one of quiet routine.
Tasks include:
Installation, configuration and upgrading of server software and related products
Evaluate features and related products
Provide basic maintenance support for servers ( DBCC/Index Maintenance ) Implement and maintain database security (create and maintain users and roles, assign privileges)
Database tuning and performance
Setup and maintain documentation and standards
Replication or Distribution of Data to disparate sources
Plan growth and changes (capacity planning)
Provide OnCall Support for Systems to Support a 24X7 Trading environment.
Creation of new Servers or alterations of old servers.
Do general technical trouble shooting and give consultation to development teams
Interface with RDBMS Corporation for technical support
